What else do the microbacteria do in a koi pond?

AQUA-5 DRY ensures a healthy pond biology and effectively protects against toxins in the pond water through a multi-stage nitrification process. When organic material such as fish excrement and other waste materials decompose, toxins are created in the water that must be removed. From an oxygen content of 60%, the first bacterial strains in the AQUA-5 DRY begin their work and convert ammonia / ammonium into nitrite through the so-called Nitrosomonas bacteria. The nitrite, which is also toxic, is now converted into the harmless nitrate in the second step of the decomposition process by the so-called Nitrobacter bacterial strains. Harmless if the nitrate content does not exceed the limit of 50 mg per liter. Pond plants use part of the nitrate as a source of nutrients.

The other part is converted into nitrogen by the remaining bacteria in the AQUA-5 DRY in the so-called anaerobic zones and released into the ambient air. Clear water is actually unimportant for a Koi! On the contrary, he would prefer cloudy, green water. We do not only reject the use of dangerous ozone systems for this reason.

For the koi, however, a healthy biology is vital. And here savings are often made at the wrong end. Thousands of euros for technology, energy and so on, but spending on biology? Often non-existent! Or it is carelessly tried to build up biology in the pond filter with compost or garden soil for free. The Aqua-5 Dry highly concentrated instant micro bacteria contain more correct and healthy pond bacteria per gram than is contained in a truckload of garden soil and costs only €4.26 for 10,000 liters of pond water! It is not the quantity that brings success, but the quality.

Application and dosage Aqua-5 Dry highly concentrated instant micro bacteria

- the optimum water temperature is between 12°C and 24°C

- the pH value should be at least 6.5 to a maximum of 8.0

Quantity Koi pond size

AQUA-5 DRY Take a heaping tablespoon of AQUA-5 DRY for every 10,000 liters per week and soak the bacterial cultures in a few liters of pond water for about an hour (not much longer, because after about 2 hours bacteria die without food). During this time, stir well often or hang in an air vent. Then use a cup to distribute the activated solution evenly in the pond and in the pond filter, or over the stream.

The minerals and enzymes that settle at the bottom of the bucket must also be completely added to the pond. Please do not bring in the blazing sun, better in the evening hours. Cloudiness disappears in a few hours. The UV lamps should be switched off for at least 24 hours, preferably permanently.

UV lamps kill many of the bacteria and microorganisms that flow past them, making the pond water unnaturally disinfected and sterile. So only switch it on in an emergency. Please also switch off any existing protein skimmer, as this removes the nutrients from the bacteria. A good aeration of the pond filter and pond should always be ensured. In the case of sea water or salt water, the double dose of Aqua-5 Dry highly concentrated instant micro-bacteria should always be used.

For heavily soiled koi ponds, double the amount of AQUA-5 DRY should be used and repeated weekly until a clear improvement is visible. If the pond filter system is well run in, a 4-week replenishment is sufficient. It should be replenished later based on your own experience. Depending on the pond, solar radiation and koi stock, 6 weeks is enough. For an optimal effect, the filter flow should be set so that the pond water flows through the filter media for at least 10 minutes.

Shelf life of the bacteria: Stored in a cool and dry place, it can be stored for 2 to 3 years.

Again and again we find that many basic things are not known and this often causes gross errors with bad effects. So it should be clear to every koi keeper today that the pond filter has to run day and night. Because if you switch off the filter in the evening and only switch it on again the next morning, you are pumping liquid manure into the pond, so to speak. Because the biology in the filter dies after just a few hours, the pond water then collapses and ammonia and nitrite form. A good supply of oxygen from the pond filter by means of air vents should always be ensured, as this is extremely important for the metabolism of the bacteria.

Cleanliness and hygiene are important, but cleaning the pond and filter for no reason can also be harmful. Why should a pond filter be cleaned if it works perfectly and all water values are good? Scrubbing and rinsing the pond and filter significantly disrupts the biology and often creates problems that weren't there before.

In nature there is also no scrubbing, there are no UV and ozone systems, but many healthy bacteria that ensure order and cleanliness and exactly bacteria AQUA-5 DRY brings into our small biological cycles to maintain an ecological balance.

Of course, dirt and waste should be regularly disposed of through floor drains from the filter circuit. This does not include the laboriously built bacterial lawn and the biomass in the filter chambers. A healthy filter smells like fresh forest soil. However, if smelly sludge comes out of the floor drain, this is a sign that the bacterial biology is not sufficient.

Aqua-5 Dry highly concentrated instant micro bacteria are healthy biology and good for the pond water and for the koi. The koi like it and feel very comfortable in it. So there is no need to panic when things like this occur, but you should intervene with a steady hand and in a biological way so that the koi owner is happy with the environment and the fish and can see his pets clearly. A short algae lawn on the pond walls is healthy nature and therefore to be evaluated positively.

The Aqua-5 Dry highly concentrated instant micro bacteria are not a miracle cure as is sometimes claimed, but they offer a concentrated load of biology with which a healthy and clear koi pond can be permanently maintained.

If the success does not occur within two to three weeks, the following points must be checked immediately and, if necessary, remedied:

- Is there enough oxygen in the pond filter and pond?

- Is the pH in the range of 6.5 to 8?

- Are there too many dissolved phosphates in the pond water?

- Is iron-rich well water used?

- If inorganic suspended matter clouds the pond water, the pond filter flow must be throttled or the filter materials in the last filter chamber must be compressed to filter out substances. Bead filters always require a longer start-up phase, since a bacterial lawn settles much more poorly on moving filter material.

Koi and pond care is not an easy hobby and pond water care is a closed book for many koi friends. AQUA-5 DRY can be of decisive help here, because all technology has almost no influence on the PH value, nitrite, phosphates, etc. Here, healthy biology helps in the first place. A surface skimmer, i.e. a skimmer, should also be installed in every koi pond to break up the pond water surface and suck off the dirt. In the summer months, air vents should also be used in the pond, about 30 cm above the pond floor, because the pond plants give off oxygen during the day, but at night the pond plants, bacteria and koi consume the available oxygen from the koi pond. Therefore, ventilation at night is extremely important, especially in warm temperatures. Here, the use of the UV lamp can be quite useful.

Any necessary treatment of diseases in the pond must be completed by the beginning of September, since the later pond water temperatures below 15 degrees significantly or completely limit the effect of almost all medication. Remember in good time that a single sick Koi can cause a parasite explosion, so no new Koi should be introduced into the pond after September. Here, however, Aqua-5 Dry highly concentrated instant micro bacteria should be used preventively.

In autumn, please give a high-fat koi feed with values of around 10% fat. This promotes the build-up of fat deposits and prevents an energy deficiency syndrome in spring. Attention, excessive, unbalanced feeding before winter can also lead to the death of the koi.

If the feeding is stopped in winter below 8 degrees water temperature, highly concentrated instant micro bacteria can also be exposed with the dosage of Aqua-5 Dry until the water temperature exceeds 8 degrees again in spring. Of course, the pond filter should remain in operation during the cold winter months. However, the flow should only be approx. 20% of summer operation. A smaller pump can be used for this, or the existing pump can be throttled by a dimmer. Likewise, not all pond bottom drains should be used and mainly the upper water should be circulated. Streams and waterfalls must be switched off in any case to prevent cooling down. AQUA-5 DRY also contains hardy bacterial strains up to 4 degrees, but many bacteria die off in the cold winter, so it is advisable in spring, from 8 - 10 °C, to bring in a double dose as a filter starter, or one dose each at 8 °C , 10 °C and above 12 °C. Special starter bacteria, sludge degradation bacteria or the like are not required. With the double dose, your pond filter will be fully activated again in 24 to 48 hours. This also applies after heavier use of medication.

Danger! If you work with zeolite in the pond filter, no salt may be used in the pond, as it would immediately trigger an ammonia surge that could be life-threatening for the koi.

If winter surprises you, please do not hack a hole in the ice for ventilation, but use hot water or an immersion heater, otherwise the noise could shock and kill the koi. For a good oxygen supply and without disturbing the koi with loud noises, the use of oxidizers has proven very effective. In this way, oxygen is distributed to all areas of the pond cost-effectively, safely and without major water movement, and the koi are prevented from suffocating from a lack of oxygen or dying from fermentation gases. With large 5 liter oxidizers, ponds up to 25,000 liters (2 for 50,000 liters) can easily be supplied over the winter. With careful winter planning, it is not necessarily the case in our latitudes that a few Koi have to die in winter every year!

If the temperatures rise above 8 °C again in spring, we recommend changing the pond water by 30 to 50%. It can also be done slowly over a few days. If the temperatures continue to rise, the daytime temperatures should be maintained overnight by additional heating and thus rise slightly every day. This can also be achieved very inexpensively with a home-made solar heating system. (e.g. 20 to 50 meters of garden hose as a spiral on a black background and covered with a plexiglass pane.) With a small pump you can achieve constantly warmer water. It is better to sacrifice the value of just one koi for heating costs than to find several koi in the spring, or even the entire stock in a miserable condition.

Lack of oxygen always means stress and weakening of the koi's organism and weakening of the filter biology, whether in summer or winter. The best water quality, a well-kept pond, a healthy filter and well-conditioned koi are therefore also the basic requirements for lasting enjoyment of our beautiful hobby koi pond.
