Shusui

Shusui - a valuable and decorative koi

The shusui, a nishikigoi (short-form carp), actually belongs to the koi variety asagi, but refers to the unscaled form of this genus. The shusui is not completely unscaled, but it only has a single row of scales on its body, which runs from the base of the shoulder to the tail. This row of scales is the essential feature that characterises a shusui. In addition, the distinctness of the row of scales significantly increases the value and quality of the shusui. The body shape is actually quite dynamic and elegant, but due to the influence of the mirror carp, which is also crossed into this breed, the Shusui tends to have a pronounced belly, and if overfed, the Shusui unfortunately only appears plump.

Shusui from BB Handel - vital specimens with marvellous markings

It has been rumoured among experts that the colouring of this species is particularly effective in soft water, but this claim has not been confirmed. According to reports from some breeders, the quality of the water is not the decisive factor. After clear trials with both variants, the result was always different. Some Shusui kept in hard water developed a magnificent colouration with exceptional brilliance, but not in soft water. The Shusui that you will find here in our Koi Shop are vital specimens, all with fantastic markings and clear colours. But see for yourself!
